Assistant Artistic Director

The mission of the Charlotte Pride Band is to provide an open, inviting environment for musicians of all ability levels while promoting the value and respect of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and allied people in the Charlotte metropolitan area through quality musical performances.

Job Description

The Assistant Artistic Director is a creative individual who helps conduct the various ensembles of the Charlotte Pride Band, in particular focusing on small ensembles. Working with the Artistic Director, this person helps choose the repertoire for each performance that best suits the performers and audience; works to schedule and maintain community outreach opportunities; and represents the Charlotte Pride Band to the community, the LGBA (Lesbian and Gay Band Association), vendors, donors, and prospective members. Charlotte Pride Band is a not-for-profit organization; this position does, however, receive a stipend commensurate with experience.      

Responsibilities

  • Supports the Artistic Director by helping lead rehearsals and conduct performances of Symphonic Band, Chamber Ensembles, and Marching Band.

  • Assists with selection of themes and repertoire for ensembles.

  • Identifies musical equipment necessary for performances.

  • Works closely with board members to maximize rehearsal productivity and finances.

  • Maintains a positive and inclusive rehearsal environment for members. 

Minimum Qualifications

The following minimum qualifications for the Assistant Artistic Director must be met in order to be considered for the position:

  • Bachelor of Music, near completion, or equivalent combination study and experience.

  • Musical knowledge of brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments.

  • Ability to read a full band score.

  • Experience conducting musical ensembles of various experience levels.

  • Ability to articulate music theory, phrasing, and concepts.

  • Knowledge of standard concert band literature.

Preferred Skills

The following preferred qualifications are not required in order to apply, but are advantageous to an applicant:

  • Proficiency in Jazz methods; ability to lead/rehearse/conduct Jazz ensembles.

  • Experience with marching band repertoire and techniques.

  • Ability to arrange music for ensembles of various sizes.
